Continuing Education for Paramedics in Florida
Florida Department of Health oversees the recertification process for EMT and Paramedic credentialed EMS providers. We've outlined the recertification process for Florida, provided some helpful links, and answered frequently asked questions.

How often do I need to renew my EMT certification in the State of Florida?
The state of Florida requires certification to be renewed every two years.
Does Florida follow the NREMT'S NCCP Model?
The State of Florida does not follow the NREMT's NCCP model. We've broken up the requirements for renewal by EMS provider level:
Guide to Florida EMT Recertification
- EMTs renewing for the first time are exempt from completing continuing education.
- EMTsin the second renewal window are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education. * 2 hours must be devoted to pediatric emergencies*
- All EMTs renewing must provide a current copy of your CPR certification (front and back). Approved CPR courses:
- American Heart Association BLS Provider
- American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer
- A CPR equivalent certification from an organization approved by the Bureau of EMS pursuant to 64J-2.038, Florida Administrative Code.
- Submit a recertification application via the MQA Online Portal located at http://www.flhealthsource.gov/
- Provide a certified check or money order payable to the Florida Department of Health based on the following:
- If renewing BEFORE your certificate expires, your fees will be (as of July 2021):

Guide to Florida's Paramedic Recertification:
- Florida Paramedics renewing for the first time are exempt from completing continuing education.
- Florida Paramedics renewing for the second time or beyond are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education. * 2 hours must be devoted to pediatric emergencies*
- All Florida Paramedics renewing must provide a current copy of your CPR certification (front and back). Approved CPR courses:

Frequently Asked Questions
CAN I COMPLETE ALL OF MY CONTINUING EDUCATION ONLINE?
Yes. Code One's Online EMT Recertification course provides all required continuing education hours in a flexible virtual format. Participants complete a combination of scheduled live courses in a virtual conference room and distributive pre-recorded courses which may be completed at any time.
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE LIMITS ON DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION?
EMT Recertification limits distributive education (pre-recorded) course hours. Virtual instructor-led training (VILT) courses are conducted in real-time via webinar and are approved in the F5 category by the NREMT. There is no limit for hours that can be obtained through VILT.
WHAT IS THE SCHEDULE FOR LIVE VIRTUAL INSTRUCTOR-LED TRAINING THROUGH THE ONLINE EMT RECERTIFICATION COURSE?
Live courses are scheduled on weekdays from 10am to 6pm with five courses offered per day. There are additional evening and Saturday sessions scheduled during February and March. Most classes are one hour in length.
IF I RENEW MY NREMT CERTIFICATION, DO I STILL NEED TO GET A STATE CERTIFICATION?
EMTs need a state certification to practice. The EMT can easily submit their updated NREMT certification through the state licensing portal to obtain updated state EMT certification.
