I'm a little teapot, short and stout.
Here is my handle, here is my spout.
When I get all steamed up, hear me shout.
Just tip me over, pour me out!

Here you thought that was the story in a nutshell, but it's just the beginning. The kids join the teapot on a psychedelic adventure through a variety of situations around the world.

(view spoiler)[I hate to nitpick, but when in Mexico, the male child is keeping a hash tag score for the bull and the teapot. Why did the child write a zero under the bull, while the match is still ongoing and the teapot is scoring another point at the moment? The space under the bull should be blank.

Additionally, the teapot makes a disturbingly bad spaceship. A self-opened door, seemingly no airlock, and the rapid loss of pressurization through the nose? I wouldn't ride that to a far-off planet.

The masthead emerging from the teapot as pirate ship is pretty hilarious, I have to admit.

And the teapot is capable of all of these other feats, but can't notice or feel a fox sitting inside of it? That would make me a bit apprehensive about riding in it for future endeavors.

Encouraging children to play hide and go seek in a dangerous jungle with snakes? Not a good lesson for survival.

Finally, the penultimate page of the book lets us know what was really happening here. The teapot has a stoned blissful face, plant material coming out of the spout and top. On the opposing page, the children share a conspiratorial wink with the blushing teapot. Wink wink, nudge nudge, we know what's going on here. Herbal tea indeed. Once the family and friends are dosed up with the "herbal" tea, of course they see the fox, alien, bull, and Chinese dragon kite. (hide spoiler)]

5. I could use this book in a lot of ways. One way I would use is it is to talk about sequencing. For example, I would ask the students "where did the teapot go first? Where next?" and so on. Another activity I would do is ask the students where they would like to go or what adventure would they like to embark on with the teapot. I would have them draw a picture and write a sentence or two about it for upper grades.

This simple nursery rhyme book also illustrated different cultures (Chinese and Mexican), the use of imagination and the importance of friends and family.
In Class: This book could be used to talk about different cultures, space, dreams, etc. If you're feeling brave, you could even try to write a verse with your class (count syllabus in each line) and then sing it together in class. The class can sing, dance, and act out each page to help follow along with the story. Another classroom use could be using the book as a segue into talking about Colonial times/history and having a tea party.

This scans so nicely! I sang it at story time this week and everyone immediately quieted down and listened attentively. I like how the teapot has lots of different kinds of dreams - not just exploring geographically new places but also trying new experiences. I do think some of the country pages have held up oddly - in particular, the one where the teapot wants to go foxhunting!?!? Still, this is so easy to sing and the pictures are bright enough that I'll definitely keep it in the repertoire. This scans so nicely! The teapot travels to space, China, the opera, and many other places with these two children. Each page features a different location with some version of the original 4-verse stanza with the rhyme scheme AAAA, since each line rhymes with the next. I thought that the book was very fun. The pictures were, in my opinion, the best part of the story because they seemed to tell more than the stanzas did. I wouldn't want to spend too much time on this book in class since there does not seem to be many uses for it. I can think of instructing the students to follow the same pattern of "I'm a little teapot. . ."and completing the stanza with their own rhymes. Other than that, the lessons I would pair with this book seem redundant, especially to the other nursery rhymes. ...more

This book follows a teapot who takes her "family" on an adventure of her dreams! They travel through China, Mexico, space, an opera, a pirate ship, London, and the jungle all while singing their adventures to the same normal tune of "I'm a Little Teapot." At the end, everyone they met on their adventures is back at their home for a little bit of tea!

Professional Recommendation/Review #1:
Carol Raker Collings, Ph.D. (Children's Literature)
In this expanded version of the traditional song, the little teapot shares his dreams with two children as he waits on the stove for someone to make tea. His imaginary escapades include a boat ride in China, a bullfight in Mexico, a space outing, a trip to the opera, a pirate ship ride, a foxhunt, and a jungle hide and seek game. The cute teapot is very versatile in all these exploits. For example, his spout becomes a fishing rod on the Chinese boat, an orchestral horn at the opera, and a trumpet on the foxhunt. The story ends with a tea party for all of the children's family and friends (including some they met on their trips--the fox and an alien). The illustrations are cheerful. Even the back to back two-page spreads in the jungle show smiling snakes and lizards. The watercolors use the entire palette from a particularly attractive pink, yellow, and green kite to a brown bull frolicking into a red cape in a red-rimmed arena. The musical score and adapted lyrics are included in the back of the book. This would be quite enjoyable as a parent and child sing-a-long.

Professional Recommendation/Review #2:
The Horn Book Guide
In additional verses to the song, the little teapot takes two children on an imaginary trip to China, Mexico, space, the opera, the sea, a fox hunt, the jungle, and back home again for teatime with everyone they met on their journey. The awkward, unimaginative verses are accompanied by bland illustrations of the rosy-cheeked characters. A minor typo appears in the musical notation at the back.

Response to Two Professional Reviews:
These two reviews seem to be completely opposite when it comes to the illustrations. However, the first review does this book justice. The second review completely overlooks the fun adventure the teapot takes us on and is focused on the illustrations. The illustrations suit this book well and help us feel like we are on the adventure with the children and the teapot.

Evaluation of Literary Elements:
The teapot is the main character in this book, as well as the two children she brings along with her. The words are inviting and fun and tag along to where they are located. For example "si señor" when they are in Mexico! There is a lot of excitement throughout the whole book because of the illustrations, thus making the tone of the book very positive and inviting. The inviting tone of the book comes from the teapot who is the narrator and says "we" and "you" inviting all listeners to be part of her travels.

Consideration of Instructional Application:
Depending on age, each student could write an adventure or a dream of his or hers to the tune of "I'm a Little Teapot." Just like this book, we could make a classroom book of all our adventures with illustrations as well! With younger kids, we could also have our own tea party and dress like some of the character in the book! Some students could be aliens, some could be animals, and some could be pirates, etc.!
